•  'Best Ever' GCSE Performance
  •  Rhosnesni 'outstanding' in gaining national award

July 2014

Dear Parents

As we draw to the end of a very busy and successful term, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in helping us to raise standards across the school.  Please view our latest newsletter (available at the top of this webpage) which highlights the wide range of achievements and progress made by our school community during the summer term and Im sure you will find it to be both interesting and informative.

I am delighted with the progress the pupils have made this year. Together with my congratulations to them, I also extend my thanks to you as parents for your support and to the staff for their hard work, which ensures our pupils continue to work to their full potential.

You will be aware that a team of inspectors from Estyn visited the school last week to monitor our progress against the recommendations and I am pleased to report that the team of inspectors reported significant improvements have been made in all categories.  The HMI reported that the attendance and punctuality has improved significantly, the quality of teaching and learning is improving, the standards of behaviour of pupils has improved and the overall school community is more focused on achieving the best quality outcomes for all our pupils.  The Lead Inspector from the original Inspection commented that the school has made significant improvements since his visit in March 2013.

The school has worked very hard to achieve the recognition of the commitment to making improvements over the last twelve months and our pupils have played a huge part in the ongoing transformation of our school environment.  Ysgol Rhosnesni is on a positive journey of improvement, however, we still have further work to do and my colleagues and I are committed to ensuring that the school continues to improve.

It is always a pleasure to reward our pupils for their achievements and it was wonderful to present so many awards last week at the Achievement Awards Evening at the William Aston Hall in recognition of the achievements of our pupils.  In addition to our Awards Evening, it is my pleasure to report that 5 of our pupils were nominated for the Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire High Achievers Awards. Hollie Gibson, (Heart of Gold), Harri Lovett, (One to Watch), Charlie Jones, (Young Braveheart), Molly Smith, (Creative Genius) and Jack Hughes (Academic Achievement).  Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners.

On Monday we had a very successful Sports Day and the pupils and staff joined together to host a truly competitive event.  My congratulations to all of the participants and winners.

On Tuesday we welcomed 300 Year 5 pupils from our Cluster Schools as part of the Get Set for Summer Programme.  Our Year 9/10 Sports Leaders worked with the Year 5 who experienced a range of sporting activities.  It was a pleasure to welcome Year 5 to Ysgol Rhosnesni.

Pupils and staff have returned from a number of successful trips to Taize and Paris and the Battlefields in France.  A truly memorable experience has been had by all those who attended.  It is these unique experiences which stay with pupils for years to come.

I would also like to take this opportunity to share a few thoughts and key dates with you prior to the start of the new school term in September.

Uniform and Dress Code

For your information, an updated version of the school uniform and dress code is available on the school website. I should be grateful, if you would spend a few moments to read through the information with your son / daughter to ensure that they start the new school term in full and correct uniform.  Blazers are compulsory for all year groups.  The uniform and dress code is an important element of improvement at Ysgol Rhosnesni.

Uniform is supplied through RAM Leisure, Whitegates Industrial Complex, Wrexham, LL13 8UG, (01978) 360360. www.ramleisure.com. The store is open throughout the summer holiday and orders can also be placed online if you so wish. It is envisaged that this arrangement will make it easier for parents to purchase uniform both during term time and for the start of the new school year.

Staffing Changes

The following staff will sadly be leaving Ysgol Rhosnesni at the end of this academic year; Mrs K Beattie (Speech & Language), Mrs J Blackburn (Assistant Headteacher/ Maths), Miss D Carter (PE), Mr J Foley (Science), Mr M Hand (Progress Manager/ Art), Mrs J Holt (ALM ICT), Mr S Jones (Science), Mrs S Jones (ALM ALN), Mr J Klafkowski (ALM Science), Mr R Parry (English), Mrs J Price (ALM D&T), Mrs K Campbell (Community Tutor), Mr C Dawson (LSA), Mrs S Newitt (Admin Assistant) and Mrs M Proctor (LSA).  I therefore wish to take this opportunity to thank them for the tremendous contribution they have made to the development of the school and our pupils and to wish them every future success.

I am pleased to inform you that the school has now completed its recruitment cycle for the academic year 2014 2015 and that the following staff will be joining us in September:

Miss M McCarthy

Miss S Cheers

Mrs L Hasford

I am sure that you join me in wishing them every future success in their work with the pupils and the school community.

Could I request your support in ensuring that if you drop off or collect your son/daughter from school, could you please respect the local residents and not park across the neighbouring driveways.  The issue has caused some additional congestion at the start and end of the school days.  I would also like to remind parents that the school has limited capacity for parking and if you are collecting your son/daughter there are a limited number of visitor bays in the car park to the left of the entrance.  This reduces congestion and ensures that health and safety is maintained.  Please do not park on the drive or block exits.

Your support as parents/guardians this year has been very much appreciated.

In conclusion, may I wish you and your family a restful summer break and I look forward to welcoming your son / daughter back to school for the start of the new academic year in September 2014.

Yours sincerely

N D Harrison
