10 April 2014

Dear Parent/Guardian

As we come to the end of a very busy and productive spring term, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in helping us to raise standards across the school.

You will be aware that a team of inspectors from Estyn visited the school last week to monitor our progress against the recommendations issued following the original inspection in March 2013.

I am pleased to report that the team of inspectors reported significant improvements have been made in all categories. The HMI reported that attendance and punctuality has improved, the quality of teaching and learning is improving, the standards of behaviour of pupils has improved and the overall school community is more focused on achieving the best quality outcomes for all our pupils.

The school has worked very hard to achieve the recognition of the commitment to making improvements over the last five months and our pupils have played a huge part in the ongoing transformation of our school environment. Ysgol Rhosnesni is on a positive journey of improvement, however, we still have further work to do and I would ask that you continue to support us with our drive to improve the standards of behaviour, attendance, punctuality and learning at school every day.

It is always a pleasure to reward our pupils for their achievements and this term has seen many pupils receiving a Headteacher Commendation in recognition of their hard work. There has been a huge range of activities and achievements taking place across the school and I would like to draw your attention to a few highlights.

I am pleased to report that recently a group of Year 9, 10 and 11 Geography pupils attended a Mock United Nations Conference representing Lebanon and the Maldives and successfully debated global issues such as the Syrian conflict and Global Warming.

It was a great pleasure to see so many parents and staff supporting our Year 9 pupils at the Rendezvous Restaurant at Coleg Cambria in February. The event was a fantastic success and the organisational, design and creative skills were of a very high standard as pupils cooked and served a three course meal for guests in the restaurant. The evening was a night to remember.

Last week, a group of Year 8 pupils performed a dance at The Stiwt Theatre. This was the culmination of a project with W’ham Dance Programme, a dance piece inspired by an exhibition of art work. The performance was of a very high standard and it was a great pleasure to see the school represented on such a creative evening.

I would like to wish a number of pupils the very best of luck as they begin their journey representing Wales at the first ever Tri Nations Challenge taking place at Tollcross, Glasgow, Scotland, during the British Commonwealth Trials Championships.  Karen Pickering will be commentating on the event and Becky Adlington will be on hand to meet and greet the teams and present the winning team with their trophy.  This event truly will be a unique and inspiring event for all competing.

I would like to wish Mrs C Colclough (Community Governor) and 10 Year 10 pupils the best of luck as they embark on their practice Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award expedition over 2 days with 1 night camping in the Llangollen area over the Easter holidays.

Well done to the Eco Committee who have been very busy working on the Community Garden with Mr Richard Sharples.  Lots of sowing, planting and weeding has taken place and we look forward to seeing further work on this in the coming months

Today we wish every success to the staff and pupils who are visiting Germany over the Easter holidays. A wonderful once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Munich, Nuremberg and Berlin.

After the Easter holidays, the school will begin the summer examination and assessment season. Year 10 and 11 will start the final programme of external examinations and Years 7, 8 and 9 will be sitting their National Reading and Numeracy Tests (click here for information) during the week beginning 7th May 2014. Please see timetable below.

This is a particularly stressful time for pupils who are sitting examinations and assessments and I would like to ask for your support in ensuring that your son/daughter is as fully prepared as they can be ahead of the tests/exams.

My colleagues will have issued information to help pupils plan and prepare for the next steps and there are many opportunities available for GCSE pupils to attend extra revision sessions including the Easter School programme.  Details are available from our school website at www.rhosnesni-high.wrexham.sch.uk   Information on the National Literacy and Numeracy Tests is also available on the website and further information will be sent out early next term.

I would like to remind you of the importance of your child being on time for school.  It is essential that pupils are outside their form class by 8.45am when the first bell goes.  This will mean a prompt start to registration and the school day.

Finally, could I request your support in ensuring that if you drop off or collect your son/daughter from school, could you please respect the local residents and not park across the neighbouring driveways. This issue has caused some additional congestion at the start and end of the school days.

The start of the summer term begins with a staff training day on Monday 28th April 2014.   The school will re-open to pupils on Tuesday 29th April 2014.

Thank you for your ongoing help and support and may I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy Easter.

Yours sincerely
